In a move that has ignited a heated debate within the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) community, church members are calling for the retraction of the Global Award of Excellence bestowed upon prominent businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei.

Last month, during a ceremony at Solusi University, Tagwirei made history as the first Black recipient of the esteemed award, a recognition that now faces fierce backlash due to his active involvement in Zimbabwe’s political landscape.

A group of concerned church members voiced their discontent in a letter addressed to the SDA’s international leadership and local organizations in Zimbabwe and Southern Africa.

They argue that Tagwirei’s association with a political party “accused of being very strict and corrupt” fundamentally contradicts the moral and ethical values upheld by the SDA Church.

The letter highlights concerns over the implications of honoring an individual with such political ties, suggesting that it raises “serious moral questions” about the church’s integrity and mission.
