Zinzombe Pepukai, the Chairperson of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (Artuz) in the Harare Northern region, was arrested on March 31st in the midst of a skirmish in the city.
According to a tweet circulating, Pepukai was walking on the street when he was taken into custody by law enforcement.
Pepukai has been charged with inciting violence.
The arrest of Pepukai has sparked outrage among teachers and civil society organizations, who are questioning if freedom to walk freely on the streets still exist.
