In a statement released on January 8, 2025, Members of Parliament from the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) vehemently opposed the proposed deferment of the 2028 elections to 2030. The CCC MPs emphasized their commitment to upholding the Zimbabwean Constitution and reiterated that their party’s agenda does not include the 2030 election deferment.
The statement, which distances the CCC MPs from Hon. Charles Konyani’s decision, underscored the importance of adhering to the constitution. As stated in Section 202, the constitution is binding on all institutions and agencies of government, without exception.
The CCC MPs made it clear that they have no association with Zanu PF’s tactics surrounding the election deferment. Instead, they reaffirmed their commitment to serving the people of Zimbabwe, addressing pressing challenges such as food security, healthcare provision, and economic stability.
The proposed election deferment has sparked concerns about undermining the democratic process and exacerbating existing challenges faced by ordinary Zimbabweans. In response, the CCC MPs advocated for accountability, good governance, and upholding the rule of law and democratic principles.
