Background:
Ms. Leoka claimed to have a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science. This information was included in her CV and in official declarations submitted to the JSE. Based on these claims, the companies she served on made public statements about her qualifications.
However, investigations by the JSE revealed that Ms. Leoka’s PhD claim was unfounded. Despite multiple opportunities to provide evidence, she failed to do so.

The JSE found that Ms. Leoka violated the JSE’s Listings Requirements by making false statements about her qualifications. This misconduct undermines investor confidence and the principles of good corporate governance.
As a result, the JSE has imposed the following penalties on Ms. Leoka:
-Public Censure: A formal public statement condemning her actions.
-Fine: A monetary penalty of R500,000.
-Disqualification: A five-year ban from serving as a director or officer of any JSE-listed company.
This decision highlights the importance of honesty and transparency in corporate governance. It also reinforces the JSE’s commitment to protecting investors and maintaining high standards of corporate behaviour.
