WATCH LIVE as Gambakwe looks at the clarification by Zimbabwe journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono, who said he was is understood during his last space and he never said he was forming a government in waiting.
Chin’ono was speaking at during an X space hosted by UK based influencer, Boss Salani.
Chin’ono said when he was at Zimfest he met so many Zimbabweans. They all gave him the message that they now want him to focus on solutions as tweeting would not change the government in Zimbabwe.
Summary of the discussion
- Hopewell says Zimbabweans including those in the opposition are deliberately misrepresenting what he said.
- This evening I was being asked to present a statement of where I got the money that I used to build the hospitals.
- The details of the hospital are there online, they are available online, the hospitals have a board.
- I have decided to sue and other people have came online and have said they will assist me to sue.
- The allegations of me having committed fraud were created by CIO and its now sadly being used by members of the opposition.
- I don’t know why they are focusing on me when we have over 100 opposition activists in jail. They are mobilising to attack a journalist, instead of mobilising to attend court.
- I think most of these people are plants, they are not genuine opposition.
- They bash me with women that do not exist, I am being attacked by my own comrades in the opposition because they say I want to take credit for this.
- The GIE is an idea.
- I got 40 dialysis machines in the UK and the politicians could not help me to bring them in.
- I have always said I like structure, because structure brings accountability.
- I do not want to do administrative stuff, when I get those things then others do the administrative stuff.
- I can walk into the presidential office in any country and then I report to my compatriots that I have obtained such and such.
- I am now in the process of starting such an organisation with people who have approached me in the UK.
- They say Hopewell want to fight Chamisa, Hopewell such and such, its like tiri pa Barika.
- This is not the first time I have done this, I have previously set up SAVE OUR HOSPITALS.
- I approached Nelson Chamisa and asked him if we could institutionalise the help that was coming.
- But politicians are busy with politics.
- When I was at Zimfest, I met a Zimbabwean guy who is a millionaire in pharmaceuticals. I went to his home and he let me know that he gets cancer vials which cost up to USD4000 which is thrown away when it is about to expire.
- Those things must be institutionalised.
- This is our project and I do not want to name this project.
- I have gone to the UN and the commonwealth to talk about the state of the hospitals and human rights. I have been invited there two or three times.
- Our opposition has never picked the phone to call these organisations.
- In April they sent Virginia Mabhiza to lobby.
- Like Brian Kagoro says, Zimbabwe are brilliant, but they do not bring that brilliance together.
Questions
Rutendo asked Hopewell why he made claims that he is being sued in South Africa for paedophilia. Hopewell said he never smeared Rutendo, he only reported what was reported in the newspaper.
Hopewell said is he wanted to smear Rutendo, he would have published the judgement in which Rutendo lost to Innscor in a South Africa Court. Hopewell said he has nothing against Rutendo.
Is this new organisation Hopewell setting up challenging ZANU-PF in Zimbabwe.
The work that I want us to do is the same work that I have always been doing. Its the same work that I have always been doing. When I go to the UN, I am pushing the Zimbabwean agenda, its a Zimbabwean project, the fighting should be done by politicians.
I can get access to a government using name recognition as a journalist, but I am saying lets do it as an institution. I used to write a lot of letters for Zimbabweans seeking asylum in the UK….If I die my contact book should not be lost.
we have Mnangagwa who is trying to change the constitution, if we are going to lobby we can do it better as an institution than as an individual.
Why have you changed from saying you wanted to form a GIE and you are now saying you want to form an organisation which no one can understand.
Would it not have been better if you talked to stakeholders that it looking like people are jumping onto a moving train.
You are being malicious, you must check on the space it still there. I said people should go and reflect, the GIE is being malicious. Anyone who says Hopewell is setting up a GIE is being malicious and wants me to get arrested.
I have said we are setting up an institution that are based in the Diaspora. It shows why we are failing as a people.
I have already discussed with stakeholders about such an arrangement.

Is this a political animal or purely a philanthropic effort.
Did you do any money laundering in Britain when you a student?
I am surprised that I have to keep defending myself. The opportunities that we get in life are different. I was not born wealthy, but I was lucky. I was an agent of an international
Simba asks me where I got USD50c000, I have over USD 300 000 in my bank account right now and you asking me about where I got USD50 000.00?
In a normal country, a 50 year old must have 10 houses.
I don’t want people coming to me and feeding me negative vibes.
This Zimbabwe social media exasperates me, why are you always thinking negative.
We thought by coming to Twitter with this we would show the ordinary Zimbabweans that this is what governance is all about. The noises that I get is from people in Zimbabwe and they live in the Northern suburbs.
The people who are fighting me are in the Northern suburbs, they are taking blood money from ZANU-PF and Tshabangu.
We are not fighting your favourites. I have left Zimbabwe and will not be back for a long time, so I am not trying to run for President.
I made a comment about Chamisa, I have left Chamisa but you are still following me, why?
You once supported Chamisa, and then you said they are now dead as a dodo.
Political parties should be critiqued. I don’t support things even if they have mutated into being wrong, the only constant should be the truth. The fact that I supported CCC and then it turned into something that I didn’t expect it to be, its my right to say so.
Conclusion
Hopewell has not given an update on Chamisa allegations and has now walked back on his announcement of a government in exile.
