Kenyan President William Ruto has withdrawn a controversial tax hike plan after days of violent protests that left at least 23 people dead and scores injured.

Ruto announced the move in a televised address, saying he would start a dialogue with Kenyan youth and implement austerity measures to compensate for the lost revenue.

The protests, which began online and grew into mass rallies, demanded a political overhaul and an end to the tax increases.

The move is seen as a major victory for the protest movement.
