Niger will hold its runoff election tomorrow, in an election that voters hope will bring about the first democratic transition of power in the history of the coup prone country.

Niger gained independence from France about 60 years ago.

In terms of geography, Niger is located in the middle of the Sahel region, which makes it a gateway state for illicit trafficking of drugs,  goods, migrants or jihadists.

So, the leader elections is usually one of interest, not only for the people of that country but to for Africa, Europe and the world generally.

The elections held in December went smoothly and it is expected that the runoff elections will  also go smoothly.

The key political players most of the players have not changed since the 90s.

28 candidates are expected to form an opposition coalition, while 10 are open to negotiations.
