MPOI Survey Reveals Majority Zimbabwean Support for Controversial Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3

    1

A national public opinion survey conducted by the Public Policy and Research Institute of Zimbabwe (PPRIZ) indicates that a majority of Zimbabweans support several key provisions within the Constitution of Zimbabwe (Amendment No. 3) Bill. The findings, released today, highlight significant public backing for proposed changes, including the extension of terms of office for both the President and Parliament from five to seven years, and the transfer of voter registration responsibilities to the Registrar-General’s Office.

The survey, which engaged 1,641 respondents nationwide between April 9 and 18 this year, aimed to gauge public attitudes towards the constitutional amendments prior to parliamentary debate. According to the presented results, 51.3 percent of respondents expressed support for extending presidential and parliamentary terms, while 41.2 percent opposed the idea, and 7.5 percent remained undecided.

The report further noted that 55.4 percent of respondents believe Zimbabwe spends excessive time in ‘election mode’ at the expense of effective governance, suggesting a desire for greater political stability and continuity. This public sentiment underscores the complex political landscape in Zimbabwe as the nation navigates significant constitutional reforms.
