Geo Pomona Waste Management is set to significantly enhance Harare’s waste management capabilities with the acquisition of 57 new refuse trucks from China. This major fleet expansion is a strategic move to tackle the city’s long-standing garbage crisis and improve service delivery for all residents.
The new trucks, 57 of the 61 total purchased, have arrived in Zimbabwe via Forbes Border Post and are making their way to Harare. This investment is aimed at boosting the company’s operational efficiency and ensuring that waste collection services reach every corner of the city.
Geo Pomona’s Chief Executive Officer and Executive Chairman, Dr. Dilesh Nguwaya, has emphasized that the additional trucks will strengthen the existing fleet and support the company’s mandate to transform Harare’s waste management to modern standards. The company had previously commissioned 45 trucks in June 2025, and this latest delivery further solidifies their commitment to a cleaner environment.
Harare has struggled with uncollected garbage for years, leading to environmental and public health concerns. The entry of private players like Geo Pomona, following a tripartite agreement with the City of Harare and the Ministry of Local Government, aims to make piled-up refuse a thing of the past.
With this expanded fleet, Geo Pomona is better equipped to implement a more extensive door-to-door waste collection program, which has already begun in some suburbs like Mbare, bringing renewed hope for a cleaner and healthier “Sunshine City”.
The new trucks are part of a larger, integrated plan. Geo Pomona is managing the Pomona dumpsite, transforming it from a mismanaged area prone to fires and pollution into a modern waste management facility with a waste-to-energy plant. This project has been granted national project status, highlighting its strategic importance to Zimbabwe’s sustainable development and environmental goals.
The goal is to convert waste into usable energy, a cutting-edge technology that provides long-term, sustainable environmental services. The successful operation of these new trucks is a crucial step in ensuring seamless waste management from collection to processing at the plant.
