WATCH LIVE as Gambakwe looks at the announcement that Madagascar will be pulling out of SADC. This has resulted in an emergency Heads Of States And Government summit being called in Angola for later this week.

Reason for Summit: Madagascar’s military government, led by Colonel Michael Randriani, announced its withdrawal, stating a need to focus on “building strong institutions in Madagascar and to strengthen national cohesion.”

Interim Leadership: Following the withdrawal, South Africa, which deputises Madagascar, will immediately assume the interim chairmanship according to SADC’s institutional protocols (Articles 9A (2) and 10A of the SADC Treaty). This mechanism is in place to ensure the continuity of the bloc’s administrative and political functions.

Summit Agenda: The extraordinary meeting will deliberate on the implications of Madagascar’s military-led withdrawal, the position of the SADC chair, and solidify the path forward for regional stability and cooperation under the new, transitional leadership.

Formal Decision: The SADC Secretariat confirmed that a formal decision on the future leadership and Madagascar’s official position will only be available after the Heads of State meeting.
