In a shocking twist, Godfrey Tsenengamu’s political future appears to be centered on a desire to be readmitted into the Zanu-PF party. In the video, he states that he resigned from the Front for Economic Emancipation in Zimbabwe (FEEZ) and believes there is “no life outside Zanu-PF,” which he sees as the only viable political home for him. He argues that he can influence positive change more effectively from within the ruling party. Tsenengamu explains why he believes the opposition in Zimbabwe is “dead.” He gives four main reasons:
- Lack of checks and balances: He argues that the opposition is no longer effectively holding the government accountable.
- Lack of organized opposition: He states that there is no cohesive, unified opposition to the ruling party, and instead, only individuals are speaking out on specific issues.
- Individual interests over national issues: He claims that opposition members are more focused on their personal gains from being in parliament and councils, with some even forming alliances with the ruling party.
- Absence of a strong alternative: He challenges anyone to show him an effective opposition and notes that the party he co-founded, the Front for Economic Emancipation in Zimbabwe (FEEZ), is inactive.
Tsenengamu provides a more detailed explanation for his belief that the Zimbabwean opposition is “dead” and also discusses his own political future. His main points are as follows:
- The Opposition is “Dead”: Tsenengamu argues that the opposition is no longer an effective force for “checks and balances” on the government. He states that they have abandoned their core function and are no longer a viable alternative to the ruling party. [00:20]
- Resignation from FEEZ: He confirms that he resigned from the Front for Economic Emancipation in Zimbabwe (FEEZ) in late 2022 or early 2023. He explains that he co-founded FEEZ to fight for collective economic emancipation and a corruption-free Zimbabwe. [03:13]
- Desire to Rejoin Zanu-PF: Tsenengamu expresses a desire to be readmitted into the Zanu-PF party, from which he was previously expelled. He rationalizes this decision by stating there is “no life outside Zanu-PF” and that he believes he has a better chance of influencing positive change from within the party rather than from a distance. [09:42]
- Continuing the Fight Against Corruption: Despite his intention to rejoin the ruling party, Tsenengamu insists that he will continue to fight against corruption and other “negative vices” whenever he has the opportunity. [13:07]
- Acknowledgment of Party Violence: He acknowledges that Zanu-PF is a “violent party,” but also states that the opposition is violent as well, suggesting this is a widespread issue in Zimbabwean politics. [27:52]
- Belief in Zanu-PF’s Leadership: Tsenengamu states that he believes the Zanu-PF leadership is committed to improving the lives of the Zimbabwean people and that they “can do wonders.” [42:51]
He says since he made his announcement that he is return to ZANU-PF, he has been insulted by intolerant members of the opposition.
