1. On August 21, 2025, a presidential debate in Lilongwe shifted the focus of Malawi’s election from the expected frontrunners to a surprising trio: Dalitso Kabambe of UTM, Atupele Muluzi of UDF, and former president Joyce Banda of the People’s Party. The debate’s dynamics were shaped by the notable absence of two major political figures, President Lazarus Chakwera and former president Peter Mutharika, both of whom withdrew their participation. Chakwera’s team cited the need for a more “inclusive and consultative process,” while Mutharika’s camp was more critical of the format, with their withdrawals seen as strategic moves to avoid a platform they did not fully control.

2. At least five bodies were recovered from shallow graves on August 21, 2025, at a suspected cult death site in Kwa Binzaro village, Kilifi County, Kenya, near the Shakahola forest where a 2023 cult massacre occurred. Excavations continue, with 27 suspected graves identified, six exhumed so far, yielding five bodies and scattered remains. Authorities suspect victims were starved or suffocated due to extreme religious ideologies, with 11 suspects under investigation. The operation, led by forensic experts and homicide detectives, aims to uncover more graves and identify victims through DNA sampling. The primary suspect is associated with the Good News International Church, led by Paul Mackenzie, who is already in custody facing charges of terrorism, murder, and child torture from the 2023 Shakahola Forest massacre, where over 400 bodies were found.
