Over 40 employees at 54 Collective were dismissed in February 2025 when the firm announced it was shutting down. This came shortly after the Mastercard Foundation terminated its $106 million grant funding amid allegations of financial mismanagement, including unauthorized spending and improper transfers. The layoffs were abrupt and reportedly without severance packages, hitting the staff hard as the company moved toward winding down operations.
The dismissed employees included teams in tech, human resources, and growth who had supported more than 40 startups across Africa.
The shutdown not only affected these employees but also left many portfolio startups without critical operational support. Attempts to delay the closure through business rescue proceedings failed when the South African court rejected the rescue plan as legally invalid and ordered provisional liquidation of the firm in July 2025. The liquidation formalized the permanent closure of 54 Collective, compounding the impact on its workforce and the broader African startup ecosystem.
