Six members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) lost their lives and 16 others were injured in a tragic road accident along the Mutare–Masvingo Road in the early hours of Monday.

The crash occurred at around 2 AM near the 283-kilometre peg when the Toyota Quantum they were travelling in veered off the road, overturned, and landed back on its wheels.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident in a statement yesterday afternoon.

“The bodies of the deceased were taken to Masvingo General Hospital for postmortem, while the injured were admitted to the same facility,” he said.

The victims were reportedly on their way to a church gathering. Police have indicated that speeding is suspected to have been a contributing factor, though investigations are ongoing. The names of the deceased will be released once formal identification by next of kin is complete.

Authorities have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads, particularly when transporting large numbers of passengers.
