Russian national and renowned pan-Africanist scholar, Dr Vladimir Shubin, attended today’s National Heroes Day commemorations at the National Shrine in Harare, joining dignitaries and citizens in honouring Zimbabwe’s fallen heroes.
Dr Shubin is celebrated for his pivotal role in supporting Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle. He coordinated and promoted liberation narratives within the former USSR and across the globe, helping to secure international solidarity for African independence movements.
During the armed struggle, Dr Shubin was instrumental in arranging training for top Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army (ZPRA) cadres, including its elite Air Force unit-in-exile. His contributions strengthened the operational capacity of the liberation forces and deepened Zimbabwe–Soviet relations during the fight against colonial rule.
