A leaked email from July 2021 has shed light on a financial dispute involving the MDC Alliance and the Nelson Chamisa (NC) Trust over an unpaid debt allegedly incurred to fund the party’s Gweru Congress.
Coltart copied the email to then-Secretary-General Chalton Hwende, seeking confirmation that the debt had been legitimately acquired on behalf of the party. He further indicated that, if confirmed, the obligation would be entered into the MDC Alliance balance sheet and repayment arrangements made.
He also requested proof of payment from the Trust and a copy of the Trust Deed “in the interim.”
According to sources familiar with the matter, the funds in question were allegedly borrowed from the NC Trust to facilitate the MDC Alliance’s elective Congress in Gweru. The debt has reportedly remained unpaid, with disagreement over who is ultimately responsible for settling it.
The dispute adds a new layer of financial controversy to the opposition’s internal challenges, at a time when questions about party funding, accountability, and transparency continue to surface.
