Veteran sungura musician Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria, affectionately known as the “Senior Lecturer” in Zimbabwe’s music circles, has been admitted to Chitungwiza Central Hospital after being diagnosed with diabetes.
The 68-year-old music icon, whose career spans over four decades and includes mentoring some of Zimbabwe’s most celebrated artists, was taken to the hospital earlier today following concerns about his health.
Zakaria recently revealed that he had been battling swelling in his legs and struggling to make ends meet, a stark reminder of the financial challenges faced by many ageing musicians despite their lasting contributions to the nation’s cultural heritage.
Madzibaba rose to prominence in the 1980s with his Khiama Boys outfit, producing hits that became staples in Zimbabwean households. Over the years, his influence on the sungura genre earned him the “Senior Lecturer” title for his role in training and inspiring younger musicians.
