Richard Tsvangirai has issued a scathing rebuke of EcoCash, Zimbabwe’s leading mobile money platform, accusing the company of exploiting ordinary Zimbabweans through failed transactions and delayed refunds.

In a passionate post on X (formerly Twitter), Tsvangirai recounted a personal experience in which a failed EcoCash transaction left his sick mother without life-saving medication. Despite the transaction not going through, the money was deducted from his account, and EcoCash told him the refund would take 27 to 72 hours.

“This isn’t just a technical error. This is exploitation,” Tsvangirai wrote. “EcoCash is taking advantage of ordinary Zimbabweans… They hold our funds, delay our transactions, and make us beg for what is rightfully ours all while we suffer in silence.”

He described the situation as part of a broken financial system that lacks accountability and transparency. Tsvangirai’s call to action, marked by the hashtag #EndBankExploitation, has since sparked public debate about mobile money services and consumer rights in Zimbabwe.
