5. Â DJ Euphonik (Themba Nkosi) has reportedly initiated sequestration proceedings against poet and activist Ntsiki Mazwai. This legal action aims to declare Mazwai insolvent due to her alleged failure to pay over R280,000 in legal costs. The debt stems from a prolonged defamation lawsuit filed by Euphonik after Mazwai made social media posts related to rape allegations against him in early 2021.
A timeline of their court action shows that Euphonik secured an interim interdict against Mazwai in April 2021, which was later made final in March 2022, preventing her from further defaming him and ordering her to pay legal fees. Despite multiple court orders and the dismissal of her appeal attempts in January 2024, Mazwai has reportedly only paid R6,000 of the outstanding amount. Euphonik obtained a writ of execution in February 2025, and with a sheriff reportedly finding minimal assets at Mazwai’s home, the move for sequestration on July 15, 2025, marks a significant escalation in this high-profile legal battle.
6. Grammy Award-winning artist Nomcebo Zikode is facing substantial legal costs after the Pretoria High Court dismissed her appeal against Open Mic Productions, her former record label. This ruling solidifies a previous judgment from May 2025, which sided with Open Mic in a dispute over contractual obligations and “Jerusalema” royalties. While the exact final amount will be determined later, Open Mic Productions has reportedly claimed Nomcebo owes them approximately R1.5 million in legal fees, highlighting the severe financial implications of this ongoing music industry battle. Beyond the financial aspect, the May judgment also mandates that Zikode deliver two new albums to Open Mic before she can terminate her contract.
