Police have arrested businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe in connection with the murder of popular musician DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa John Sefoka. Molefe was taken into custody at his Sandton residence on Monday.
This is Molefe’s second arrest in a high-profile murder case. He is already out on bail for the April 2024 killing of engineer Armand Swart in Vereeniging. In that case, he is charged alongside three alleged hitmen: Michael Pule Tau, Musa Kekana, and Tlego Floyd Mabusela. Ballistics experts have since linked weapons from Swart’s murder to other high-profile assassinations, intensifying scrutiny on Molefe’s alleged criminal network.

Who is Katiso Molefe — and how is he connected to Cat Matlala and Shadrack Sibiya?
Molefe’s name has surfaced in several corruption and political interference investigations involving senior police and intelligence figures.

The timeline below outlines key developments:
January 2025
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu signed a letter disbanding the specialized crime intelligence task team and freezing key posts.
Brown Mogotsi informed Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala via WhatsApp that a meeting had been arranged between Shadrack Sibiya and the minister to “find a solution.”
Mogotsi sent Matlala a copy of the disbandment letter and reminded him to submit invoices. Matlala replied with a screenshot of one.
Mogotsi referenced a mysterious individual known only as “20,” described as a funder holding a R3 billion contract with SAPS. He also mentioned ongoing meetings with the DNC and COOS to finalize matters concerning Dumisani Kumalo and Mkhwanazi.
March 2025
Shadrack Sibiya recalled 121 investigation dockets from the disbanded task team, effectively halting progress on numerous cases, allegedly on Mchunu’s orders.
13 May 2025
Vusimuzi Matlala’s SAPS contract was terminated.
Matlala expressed frustration via text to Mogotsi, referencing broken promises and threatening to go public.
The Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) accessed and downloaded data from Matlala’s phones, previously in possession of the task team.
June 2025
Lieutenant General Dumisani Kumalo, coordinator of the political killings task team, was arrested by IDAC.
Molefe was granted bail in the Swart murder case.
21 July 2025
Molefe was arrested again this time in connection with the assassination of DJ Sumbody.
