Legendary sungura musician Nicholas “Madzibaba” Zakaria has called on Zimbabweans to pray for his recovery as he battles a serious illness that has forced him to take time away from the stage.

Concerns about the veteran artist’s health grew after he failed to attend a recent family show at Zebra Village, an event that he was widely expected to headline. Zakaria later confirmed that he has been unwell for some time, and was unable to perform.

“I just managed to send my band and PA system, and my son Franco, to our family show,” he said.

Despite his absence, the show went on with Franco Slomo stepping in to represent the Zakaria family and keep the sungura spirit alive.

News of Madzibaba’s illness has triggered an outpouring of support from fans and fellow musicians, many of whom took to social media to express their admiration and wish him a speedy recovery.
