DUNDEE, SCOTLAND – The community in Dundee and across the global scientific and Zimbabwean diaspora is in shock following the tragic murder of Dr. Fortune Gomo, a highly respected 39-year-old environmental and water resources scientist. Dr. Gomo was found seriously injured on South Road in Dundee on Saturday, July 5, 2025, around 4:25 PM. Despite the efforts of paramedics, she was pronounced dead at the scene. A subsequent post-mortem examination confirmed her death as a murder.

A 20-year-old man, identified as Kyler Rattray, has been arrested and charged in connection with Dr. Gomo’s death. Rattray appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court on Monday, July 7, 2025, facing a murder charge. He made no plea and has been remanded in custody, with a further court appearance expected within eight days.

Dr. Fortune Gomo was a brilliant mind with a profound impact. Originally from Zimbabwe, she held a PhD in Geography and Environmental Science from the University of Dundee, where she also served as a postdoctoral research assistant. Just recently, in February 2025, she had embarked on a new chapter, joining Scottish Water as a senior service planner in water resources planning. Her colleagues at Scottish Water described her as an “exceptional scientist” and a “highly valued” member of their team, highlighting her significant contributions to vital environmental work.

Heartbreak for Family and Friends

The news has sent ripples of grief through her personal and professional circles. Her high school and university friend, Angela Machonesa, shared a heartbreaking tribute, remembering Dr. Gomo’s “brilliance in the classroom” and profound “emotional intelligence.” Machonesa emphasized the profound loss, noting that Dr. Gomo’s passing means a child will now grow up without their mother, underscoring the senseless tragedy. It has also been reported that Dr. Gomo was attacked while walking with her 10-year-old daughter.

The Zimbabwean Embassy in the UK has swiftly responded to the devastating news, pledging full support to the bereaved family. Embassy officials have been dispatched to engage with Scottish authorities, aiming to assist with arrangements and ensure that justice for Dr. Gomo is diligently pursued.

Police Urge Public Caution Amid Ongoing Investigation

Detective Superintendent Peter Sharp, who is leading the murder inquiry, extended his deepest thoughts to Dr. Gomo’s family, requesting that their privacy be respected during this incredibly difficult time. Police Scotland has assured the public that inquiries are ongoing and they are confident the incident poses no wider risk to the community.

However, in light of “misinformation being shared on social media,” Police Scotland has urged the public to refrain from speculation. They emphasize that such unconfirmed discussions could potentially compromise future legal proceedings and cause further distress to Dr. Gomo’s grieving family.

This remains a developing story. Our thoughts are with Dr. Fortune Gomo’s family, friends, and colleagues during this time of immense sorrow.
