Sydney Gata, Executive Chairman of Zimbabwe’s state-owned power utility ZESA Holdings, has passed away.

Gata died last night after being admitted to a private hospital in Harare on Monday, reportedly suffering from chest pains.

He was a prominent figure in Zimbabwe’s energy sector, having served multiple stints at the helm of ZESA, where he was known for his influence on national electricity policy, power infrastructure development, and his role in steering the troubled utility through deep crises marked by power shortages, corruption allegations, and restructuring efforts.

Gata’s death leaves a significant leadership vacuum at ZESA, which is grappling with growing demands for electricity amid chronic generation and transmission challenges.

Further details on funeral arrangements and succession at ZESA are expected soon.
