Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono has shared a tweet regarding a leaked Cabinet memorandum from Zimbabwe’s Minister of Justice, Ziyambi Ziyambi.
This memorandum proposes a series of undemocratic constitutional amendments aimed at extending the grip of President Emmerson Mnangagwa on power.
The leaked document apparently suggests that Mnangagwa, now at the age of 86, could remain in office until he is 92 years old in 2031.
Among the proposed changes is a plan to extend the terms of the President, Parliament, and Councils by up to three years through a two-thirds parliamentary vote, effectively postponing elections.
The memorandum indicates intentions to repeal existing protections within the Zimbabwe Constitution that prevent retroactive amendments to term limits, allowing current officeholders, including Mnangagwa, to benefit from such changes.
