Zimbabwe’s military establishment is reeling from a contentious change in the command of the elite Special Air Services (SAS), with allegations surfacing that the decision was orchestrated by First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa and her son, Major Sean Mnangagwa, without President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s approval.

According to sources, a letter dated March 28, 2025, bearing the President’s signature, appointed Lieutenant General Emmanuel Matatu as the new army commander and promoted Major Edmore Madhema to lead the SAS.

However, military insiders claim that the letter was drafted without the President’s knowledge, sparking widespread concern among senior officers and analysts.
