Groundbreaking Bilateral Wilms Tumor Surgery at Parirenyatwa

65
  • This week, paediatric surgeons at Parirenyatwa Hospital helped a child with cancer in both kidneys.

  • Wilms tumor is one of the most common childhood cancers, but it usually affects only one kidney.

  • Surgeons Dr. Muparadzi and Dr. Moyo led a team that performed:

    • nephron‑sparing operation on one kidney

    • radical nephrectomy (complete removal) on the other kidney

  • This highly specialised procedure – the first of its kind at Parirenyatwa – removes all cancer while leaving enough healthy kidney tissue so the child can survive without dialysis.

  • Though cancer is a devastating diagnosis, children can recover and be cured with proper care.

  • Hats off to the surgeons, anaesthetists, and nursing staff at Parirenyatwa.

  • Thank you to @KidsOperating for equipping the children’s theatre – lives are being saved there.
