Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar announced Wednesday his intention to resign, a move he acknowledged would be a “surprise to many people.”

Addressing reporters outside government buildings in Dublin Leo said he was leaving office for “personal and political, but mainly political” reasons.

“This is as good a time as any” to step down, he said.

Varadkar was reportedly subjected to numerous death threats and hoax bomb calls during his time as Taoiseach.

Varadkar, the son of an Indian-born father and Irish mother, became a doctor before he joined the Irish parliament at 27.
