Chief Mapungwana Dies After Collapsing at Independence Day Event
Chief Mapungwana (real name Aneas Mapungwana), a traditional leader and senator, has died. He collapsed during the national Independence Day celebrations in Maphisa, Matabeleland South, on Saturday. He was taken to United Bulawayo Hospital (UBH), where he passed away around 2pm on Monday. Burial arrangements will be announced later.
He was the traditional chief of the Mapungwana area in Chipinge District, Manicaland Province. This area is part of the Tamandayi Tribal Trust Land and is home mainly to the Ndau people.
Some villages under his chieftainship include: Chijiya, Hlayiso, Hlinzana, Kwenenhu, Mabeure, Machowiro, Makumba, Mapungwana, Mapuba, Marifiye, Mashevedze, Matanga, Muchayendepi, Mufoya, Mukabaniso, Muradzikwa, Musimbo, Ngocheni, Pikana, Kobeka, Sakabuya, Siyapeya, Younga, and Zibinda.
He was also Chairman of the Manicaland Provincial Chiefs Council and served as a Senator for Manicaland’s chiefs, alongside Chief Makumbe of Buhera.
