Zimbabwe-Egypt Collaboration on Urban Transformation
The government of Zimbabwe is set to host a delegation of Egyptian technical experts to kickstart the preliminary stages of the Mt Hampden smart city project. This development marks a significant step in the realization of Zimbabwe’s vision for a new capital city. The partnership is built upon a July 2023 agreement that covers the full lifecycle of urban development, from initial design and planning to long-term city management.
Egypt’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Dr. Maha Kamel, has emphasized that Cairo is prepared to share its extensive experience in building “fourth-generation” cities. Egypt has recently undergone a massive urban overhaul, most notably with the construction of its New Administrative Capital (NAC) east of Cairo. By tapping into this expertise, Zimbabwe aims to integrate advanced technologies such as fiber-optic networks, smart grids, and automated waste management into the Mt Hampden infrastructure.
The project is strategically timed to align with Zimbabwe’s National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), providing a framework for modernization and economic growth over the next five years. While the initial engagement is strictly at the inter-governmental level to establish a solid regulatory and technical foundation, the ultimate goal is to create a robust ecosystem where the private sector can lead the actual construction and implementation phases.
