Zimbabwe to Fully Operationalise Pangolin AI Platform by Q1 2027

    10

Zimbabwe is set to make its national artificial intelligence (AI) platform, Pangolin AI, fully operational by the first quarter of 2027. This initiative is a cornerstone of the government’s efforts to develop sovereign AI infrastructure and accelerate the country’s digital transformation agenda under Vision 2030.

Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Tatenda Mavetera, announced the timeline, emphasizing that AI development must be deeply rooted in Zimbabwe’s unique reality, including its languages, specific needs, and operational environment.

Pangolin AI is designed to provide secure, locally controlled computing and data infrastructure, ensuring that sensitive national data remains within Zimbabwe rather than being reliant on foreign cloud servers. The platform aims to aggregate public datasets, including health records, agricultural statistics, and educational information, into a unified system.

Furthermore, the platform will operate on a federated model, allowing sensitive departmental and ministry data to remain stored locally while being securely accessible through privacy-preserving application programming interfaces (APIs). This strategic move is expected to empower local startups, developers, and researchers by providing them with computing power and standardized national data to develop homegrown AI solutions, with potential applications spanning disease outbreak prediction, smart agriculture, and locally relevant educational tools.
