Zimbabwe’s law enforcement has achieved a significant victory against drug trafficking, but the revelation that well-known footballers are among the suspects has sent shockwaves through the nation. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the dramatic arrest of two players, Tumai Matsika, also known as Abas Amidu (29), and Reuben Kudzai Mhlanga (41), after they were allegedly caught trafficking a staggering 750 kilograms of dagga, with an estimated street value of US$75,000.
According to police reports, the two were intercepted in a silver Honda Shuttle along the Kwekwe–Kadoma Highway. A senior ZRP spokesperson confirmed, “Our officers acted on intelligence and recovered 750kg of dagga concealed in the vehicle. Both suspects are now in custody and will appear in court soon.” This bust, described by police sources as “one of the biggest drug seizures this year,” has deeply affected Zimbabwe’s football community, where Matsika and Mhlanga were known for their local league appearances and youth coaching. Social media platforms have been flooded with disbelief and anger, with hashtags like #DaggaDerby and #FootballDrugScandal trending across X (formerly Twitter).
In a related operation, police also arrested 48-year-old Prosper Mphofu at Trabablas Interchange, after he allegedly received a parcel containing 60kg of dagga worth US$6,000 from an unidentified vehicle. Authorities believe these incidents may be linked to a larger cross-border drug network supplying cannabis between Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Mozambique. Police stated, “This is part of an ongoing crackdown on narcotics trafficking along major highways,” adding that “no one is above the law not even celebrities.”
