WATCH LIVE as Gambakwe unpacks the Kariba boat disaster in which over 100 Zimbabweans died and 75 have been rescued. So far only 15 bodied have been recovered.

Boat Disaster (Lake Kariba – 11 August 2026)

  • Vessel: Government ferry Mbuya Nehanda (built ~1985), operated by RIDA.

  • Capacity: Registered for 90 people, but was severely overloaded.

  • Passengers: Over 160 people (plus young children under 4 who didn’t need tickets).

  • Incident: Capsized near Long Island due to strong winds and a large “Binga Wave” during a 5-hour trip.

  • Casualties (so far): 15 bodies recovered, 74 rescued, ~75 missing.

  • Cause: Overloading, old age of the boat, and sudden bad weather.
