Vessel: Government ferry Mbuya Nehanda (built ~1985), operated by RIDA.

Capacity: Registered for 90 people, but was severely overloaded.

Passengers: Over 160 people (plus young children under 4 who didn’t need tickets).

Incident: Capsized near Long Island due to strong winds and a large “Binga Wave” during a 5-hour trip.

Casualties (so far): 15 bodies recovered, 74 rescued, ~75 missing.

Cause: Overloading, old age of the boat, and sudden bad weather.
