Reason for Transition: The confirmation was triggered by the resignation of the outgoing governor, Margarida Mapandzene Chongo, who had led Gaza for about six years.

Formal Process: During an extraordinary session with 81 assembly members, the body accepted the resignation letter, declared the permanent impediment of the outgoing governor, and confirmed the new governor as nominated by the Frelimo Political Commission. Assembly President José Tsambe stated the process was carried out legally.

Outgoing Governor’s Response: Margarida Mapandzene Chongo said she leaves office with a clear conscience and a sense of duty fulfilled. She rejected any involvement in alleged corruption cases and stated she is available to cooperate with the justice authorities if requested.

New Governor’s Background: Alfeu Cuna is a jurist who previously worked in the Office of the Secretary of State in Gaza since 2022. His experience includes heading the Department of Planning and Institutional Support, managing human resources, serving as a public employee trainer, an IBGE enumerator, a health activist, and a translator during the 2000 floods in Chókwè.
