Zimbabwe Government Issues Final Warning on Illegal Land Sales, Orders Arrests

    22

The Zimbabwean government has issued a stern final warning to land barons, headmen, village heads, and illegal land dealers, declaring that the era of unlawful land sales is over. Identified offenders now face immediate arrest and prosecution, a move aimed at curbing widespread corruption and illegal land occupation.

For years, numerous individuals and some traditional leaders have been implicated in the illegal occupation, subdivision, and sale of State, local authority, and communal land for personal gain. This illicit activity has led to the proliferation of unplanned settlements, significant environmental degradation, numerous land disputes, and the defrauding of unsuspecting home seekers across the country.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe, confirmed that the government has activated robust enforcement measures. These measures specifically target criminal syndicates involved in the illegal occupation, subdivision, and sale of public land.

Minister Garwe stated that this decisive crackdown follows a direct directive from President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is committed to eradicating criminality, corruption, and the abuse of public office within land administration.

“With immediate effect, all identified land barons will be arrested, prosecuted and subjected to the full penalties prescribed by law,” Garwe asserted. He further warned that “Any headman or village head found participating in, facilitating or benefiting from illegal land sales will be arrested, prosecuted and, upon conviction, removed from office in accordance with the Constitution of Zimbabwe and the Traditional Leaders Act.”

Multi-agency enforcement teams, comprising law enforcement agencies, local authorities, and the Chiefs Council of Zimbabwe, have been deployed to identify, investigate, and dismantle criminal networks responsible for illegal land allocations and settlements.

“The era of lawlessness is over. The abuse of public land, fraudulent land sales and illegal settlements will no longer be tolerated,” Garwe concluded, adding that investigations into individuals and entities masquerading as land developers, housing cooperatives, and land agents have been intensified.
