Zimbabwe’s Cabinet has announced a series of wide-ranging governance and security reforms, alongside providing an update on the ongoing repatriation and reintegration of Zimbabwean nationals returning from South Africa. The significant administrative shifts were discussed in a post-Cabinet media briefing on July 29, 2026.
Among the key approvals was the Municipal Police and Courts Bill, 2026, which aims to empower Local Authorities to formulate and enforce regulations within their jurisdictions, in line with existing Urban Councils Act and Rural District Councils Act. This move is expected to streamline local governance and enhance public order across the country.
Furthermore, Cabinet received an update on the repatriation efforts, noting that a total of 36,940 returnees have been repatriated through government arrangements, with an additional 79,730 self-repatriating, bringing the total to over 115,000. The government has also recorded 870 self-repatriations via Botswana entry points.
A critical concern highlighted was the loss of employment benefits, pensions, and unpaid dues for the returnees, which the Cabinet stated would be pursued through bilateral arrangements with South Africa. The Beitbridge Reception Centre Clinic has attended to 2,147 returnees, treating common conditions such as upper-respiratory tract infections, diarrhoeal diseases, and headaches.
In a separate but related development, the Cabinet also approved the conferment of 50,000 Independence medals to Veterans of the Liberation Struggle, an exercise slated for the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day Celebrations on August 11, 2026.
