Melissa Sbanda, an aspiring young woman working as the frontline cashier at the newly established Nomuzi Pharmacy in KwaNyuswa, was brutally shot and killed alongside the pharmacy’s 27-year-old owner, Nomzila Madinane, and their security guard.

What was meant to be a beacon of hope and accessible healthcare for the Hillcrest community turned into a crime scene on Tuesday, 19 May 2026, when unknown gunmen stormed the premises and opened fire.

The family of pharmacist Nomzila Madinane, 27, has alleged that she received death threats from a former partner prior to being fatally shot at her newly opened pharmacy. Gunmen stormed the business in KwaNyuswa, Hillcrest, killing Madinane and cashier Melissa Sbanda. A security guard injured in the attack later died from his injuries in hospital, bringing the total death toll to three.

As of May 22, 2026, South African police have not confirmed any link between the alleged threats and the murders. No arrests have been made.
