South African football coach Rulani Mokwena was arrested in Algeria on Sunday, 15 March 2026, for violating the country’s strict foreign currency regulations. He was detained at Houari Boumediene Airport in Algiers while attempting to depart for Istanbul. Approximately €14,200 (roughly R274,000) in cash. Mokwena received a two-month suspended prison sentence and a fine of 50,000 Algerian dinars (approx. R6,500). Rulani Mokwena was detained for roughly 24 hours. He was not held in a jail cell; instead, he was taken to a hotel while the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) and the South African embassy facilitated his situation.
