1. Three suspects dressed in white robes kidnapped Crossroads Hotel director Sameer Sacranie at approximately 10:30 AM on Friday. The assailants used a Toyota Fortuner with dual registration numbers and fired warning shots into the air before fleeing to Area 6, where the vehicle was later recovered; investigators believe Sacranie was transferred to another car at that location. While a specific motive has not been formally declared by the Malawi Police Service, the professional execution of the crime suggests a targeted ransom-motivated abduction or a business-related dispute, common in high-profile kidnappings involving prominent business figures.

2. The Department of Defence (DOD) and South African National Defence Force (SANDF) appeared before the Portfolio Committee on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, primarily to provide a progress report on the Budgetary Review and Recommendation Report (BRRR) and to address several urgent controversies. The meeting was marked by significant tension, as the committee accused the department of “deflecting responsibility” and “stalling accountability” regarding the following key issues: The committee raised concerns about General Rudzani Maphwanya, alleging that he has passed the legal retirement age and is “illegally continuing to serve” as Chief of the SANDF. The committee ultimately instructed the department to return with more detailed, written responses after finding the current briefing “unsatisfactory”. More information on committee proceedings can be found on the Parliamentary Monitoring Group (PMG). The committee also raised alarms about underfunding affecting the operational readiness of the SA Navy and Air Force, the urgent need for basic equipment for deployed soldiers, lack of transparency on foreign projects, and systematic financial rule-breaking including irregular personnel spending.

1. In December 2023, Engineer Innocent Chiturumani allegedly began sexually harassing ZETDC artisan Lesley Sibanda, who submitted a 76-page dossier of WhatsApp chats from 2023-2025 as evidence and formally filed a complaint in July 2025. An internal committee chaired by Engineer T. Chikomo acknowledged the advances but dismissed the harassment case, citing her “no sign of negative response” and recommending only a caution for Chiturumani. Sibanda alleges subsequent victimisation—including her contract’s unfair termination, the suspicious disappearance of her safety belt and breaking of her ladder, and her being isolated from colleagues—which culminated in a stress-induced health crisis on 26 September 2024 and her contract not being renewed after a renewal interview where Chiturumani was panellist. Despite documented complaints from 2023-2025 and an incident report from 29 October 2025, neither Chiturumani, who failed to give his side on 4 February, nor ZETDC spokesperson Dr George Manyanya have responded.
