President Duma Boko of Botswana has officially joined the Board of the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA), reinforcing Africa’s commitment to climate resilience and sustainable development.
His appointment comes as Botswana battles the harsh realities of climate change, including droughts, desertification, and water scarcity.
President Boko said the climate crisis is threatening to undo decades of progress in Africa and emphasized the need to make adaptation a core pillar of development.
“Adaptation is not an afterthought it must be at the heart of our continent’s development strategy,” he stated, pledging Botswana’s full support to the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP), a GCA and African Development Bank initiative.
GCA CEO Prof. Patrick Verkooijen praised Boko’s appointment, calling it a sign of growing African leadership on climate adaptation. GCA Chair and former Senegalese President Macky Sall welcomed the move, highlighting Boko’s voice as one that will strengthen regional and global action.
The GCA has helped drive over $17 billion in adaptation-aligned investments and is currently expanding its reach through dual headquarters in Rotterdam and Nairobi.
