Zambian political commentator and activist Joseph Kalimbwe has commended South Africa’s democratic maturity and institutional independence following dramatic scenes involving a police officer publicly accusing government officials of corruption.
In a social media post, Kalimbwe highlighted the rare level of freedom exhibited by South African law enforcement and state institutions.
“We need to learn from South African democracy. Their institutions are free from political interference. A police officer calls a press conference, accuses a minister of corruption & calls his boss a criminal. Had that happened anywhere in Africa, that officer would be fired!!!” he wrote.
Kalimbwe’s remarks come amid widespread praise for South Africa’s peaceful power transitions and the assertive role of oversight bodies, including law enforcement and the judiciary.
His comments sparked online debate, with many agreeing that the ability to hold powerful leaders accountable without fear of reprisal remains a critical test for democracy across the continent.
Kalimbwe has been a consistent voice pushing for youth involvement, institutional reform, and transparency in African governance.
