Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has announced the death of that country’s former President Ali Hassan Mwinyi (98).

Mwinyi was the second President of Tanzania, in office between 1985 and 1995.

In a televised address, President Hassan said the former President died at around 5:30 after he had been receiving treatment for lung cancer.

Mwinyi died three months before his 99th birthday.

Mwinyi had been hospitalised in London in November last year before returning to continue treatment in Tanzania, Dar es Salaam, Hassan said.

Tanzania will observe seven days of mourning with national flags flown at half-mast.
