HARARE: For the first time in the history of Zimbabwe, the police have cleared a demonstration. In a letter distributed by last night, Police Spokesman, P. Nyathi said:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to reaffirm our commitment to the democratic right of every citizen in our country. We recognise that peaceful protest is a vital expression of democracy….

This follows reports that soldiers in some high density suburbs have been driving around with loud hailers asking citizens to go and join the protests.
