Exiled Botswana President, Ian Khama, has remembered his mother, Ruth Williams Khama, on what would have been her 99th birthday.

I am Khama's mother

Khama wrote:

Dear Mother

Today is a special day for myself, my family, and all the lives you have touched. This day is significant not only because it would have been your 99th birthday, but also because it is a day to remember the exceptional person that you were —a well-known philanthropist whose acts gave comfort to many and uplifted the poor and underprivileged.

You inspired innumerable individuals all around the world throughout your active life. The values you so admirably upheld— humanity, kind-heartedness, voluntarism, and activism—reflect some of the qualities of your character. You adequately defined the term intentionality because you moved purposefully and embodied intentionality to the fullest extent! You took on the task of bringing out the best in everyone around you and, through your charitable activities, providing light to those who were in their lowest moments. Your humility and devotion to nation building, resulted in positive transformation that influenced everyone in their communities, as well as your engagement in the growth and development of young people, served as an inspiration to young Batswana.

You are always in our hearts and we will never forget all that you have taught us. May your precious soul continue to Rest In Peace Mother.

All our love, your children and grandchildren.
