United Kingdom’s longest-serving monarch, Queen Elizabeth II has died at Balmoral aged 96.
Her family gathered at her Scottish estate after concerns grew about her health earlier on Thursday.
In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” adding that, “The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
Queen Elizabeth II came to the throne following the death of her father King George VI on Feb. 6, 1952, when she was just 25.
Elizabeth’s eldest son Charles, 73, will become the king of the United Kingdom.
