The Independent reports that General Silindile Mfazi was poisoned and did not die of COVID-19 as originally reported.

The newspaper reports that the family of Mfazi suspected foul play and exhumed his body for an autopsy.

Traces of carbon monoxide were found in his blood when further tests were conducted.

General Mfazi died on Thursday, 8 July 2021. At the time of his death, General Mfazi was reporting to the former Police Commissioner, Kehla Sithole.

The SAPS is now investigating his death.
