The late Major General Godfrey Chanakira has been laid to rest at the National Heroes Acre.
Chanakira, a liberation war hero, was working as a permanent secretary in Chiwenga’s office at the time of his death from a heart problem last week.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa had denied Chanakira the Hero status before being forced to make a dramatic U-turn on his decision to merely grant Chanakira a state assisted funeral.
Military and government sources told NewZimbabwe.com the retired army chief’s death hads widened divisions between Mnangagwa and his highly ambitious deputy, Constantino Chiwenga.
