Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has pardoned 2,045 inmates to mark this year’s Africa Freedom Day.

Addressing the nation, Hakainde said the inmates include 2,012 ordinary inmates and 33 elderly inmates.

The move is in line with constitutional powers vested in the president meant to decongest correctional facilities.

Hakainde said his government will work to end the death penalty and focus on the presevation of life.

This year’s Africa Day is being held under the theme, “Leveraging National Resources to boost Food Security”
