World Health Organisation has reported an outbreak of Monkeypox with cases being recorded in Europe.

The latest new cases were reported in France, Italy, Sweden and Australia.

It follows the confirmation of cases in the US, Spain and Portugal on Wednesday, as well as the investigation of 13 suspected cases in Canada.

WHO reports that Monkeypox is caused by monkeypox virus, a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus in the family Poxviridae.

Monkeypox typically presents clinically with fever, rash and swollen lymph nodes and may lead to a range of medical complications.

It is transmitted to humans through close contact with an infected person or animal, or with material contaminated with the virus.

Vaccines used during the smallpox eradication programme also provided protection against monkeypox.
