Vehicles have been temporarily banned from using the Chilonga Bridge across the Runde River following an increase in drownings.

A number of vehicles have been swept away by floods while trying to cross the river and submerged in water.

Last Saturday a Netone vehicle was swept off the bridge after the driver lost control while trying to cross.

The vehicle was only retrieved on Monday in the afternoon together with the two people thought to be employees.

In 2022 alone, more than 8 lives have be lost after vehicles were swept away.

Hopewell Chin’ono blamed the increased number of deaths on the government’s lack of infrastructure development in Chilonga.

He said:

“This is Chilonga bridge where a pastor, Mr Zvarimwe, died because there is no proper bridge. A member of the Zimbabwe Republic Police sub-aqua team is among the 5. Please ZANUPF STOP the LOOTING and build bridges to save lives!Be patriotic for a change!”
