Johannesburg MMC for community safety, David Tembe has called for South African borders to be closed to foreigners.

The visibly frustrated Tembe was speaking from Alexandra where he was overseeing a police operation to maintain peace between Zimbabweans and South Africans in the highly polarised suburb.

Tembe said when he was the Head of Metro Police, they kept arresting Zimbabweans and Mozambicans and they kept coming back, resulting in the police being called xenophobic.

He said the various departments who are supposed to secure the borders have let the country down with their lax approach.

Tembe said the issue of foreigners is national and can not be addressed at local level. He urged the National structures to deal with the issue once and for all.
